"The headquarters detachment for the U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command will officially be part of Redstone Arsenal after a formal ceremony planned for Tuesday, June 26, 2007.
An Uncasing Ceremony is planned for 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at the Sparkman Center's Bob Jones auditorium. This will be an official "uncasing" of the Space & Missile Defense (SMDC) flag, which symbolizes the location of its command. The move will bring 180 SMDC positions to Huntsville with this exchange. Nearly three dozen employees are moving, leaving the remaining positions to be filled.
The Uncasing Ceremony is considered to be a significant community event, according to SMDC officials, because it is more than just a symbol of the BRAC activities scheduled to bring prosperity to Redstone: It is a tangible, visible movement of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission discussions taking place.
When BRAC is completed, SMDC commander Army Lt. Gen. Kevin T. Campbell told The Times, 'having SMDC in such close proximity to the Missile Defense Agency and other work that goes on in Huntsville will be a benefit.' Along with SMDC headquarters, the majority of the Missile Defense Agency, which serves all branches of the armed forces, the Army Materiel Command headquarters and the Army Security & Assistance Command headquarters are also being moved to Redstone.
Along with those major agencies, helicopter work is being relocated from Fort Rucker and from Robins Air Force Base, Ga. The Army 2nd Recruiting Brigade is also coming from Fort Gillem in Atlanta.
The moves, slated by law to be completed by 2011, are expected to bring at least 4,500 federal jobs to Redstone. "
